a) Exposure: Let more people know you have an email list (read this newsletter)

b) Offer: Make it more attractive to join your email list using lead magnets

You need a lead magnet because it increases your subscriber conversion by 50%+.

In the past 2 years, my lead magnets drove 65,000 subscribers for me.

The Simple 7-Step System to Create a High-Converting Lead Magnet

Step 1: Craft an Irresistible Offer Your Dream Customer Can't Refuse

The key to a successful lead magnet is to put yourself in your dream customer's shoes. Ask yourself, "What would be so irresistible and undeniable that they just can't say no to it?"

Your lead magnet should be:

a) Desirable and relevant to your target audience

b) Insanely valuable - they'd be willing to pay for it

A mistake many people make is trying to make the lead magnet a "half solution". They don't give away the entire solution. But that's unsatisfying for the customer.

Instead, your lead magnet should solve a complete problem for the reader.

✅ Hyper-specific checklist for optimizing your LinkedIn profile

Step 2: Choose the Right Lead Magnet Type and Format to Deliver Quick Wins

There are three main types of lead magnets that convert like crazy:

1. The Problem Revealer: Helps your audience find a hidden problem (and positions your product as the solution). I.e. "5 audience-building mistakes founders make on LinkedIn"

2. The Sampler: Gives a small taste of your paid offering, leaving them wanting more. Give away one lesson of your paid course. Or a masterclass recording.

3. The Quick Win: Provides a specific, achievable result in a short timeframe. I.e. "Steal my proven system to find 100 content ideas in 25 minutes"

Once you've chosen your type, decide on the best format for delivering your lead magnet.

Some popular options include:

  • Checklists
  • Email Courses
  • Templates
  • Whitepapers
  • Ebooks
  • Video Series

Longer isn't better. Instead, aim for a high ideas-to-words ratio. Think about-

"What's the most useful, low-friction way for my audience to use this?"

Step 3: Create Your Lead Magnet with Problem-Solving, Actionable Advice

The minimum-viable-lead-magnet has 3 parts:

1. A short introduction to the problem it solves

2. Insanely actionable advice that provides a complete solution to that specific problem

3. One clear call-to-action (CTA) for the next step

Remember, your lead magnet should be a "perfect partial solution".

It completely solves one specific problem.

That makes the reader think: "Wow, if Matt could help me solve this first problem, I bet he can solve my other problems too"

Don't hold back on secrets. How you do one thing is how you do everything.

Step 4: Deliver Your Lead Magnet Seamlessly to Maximize Conversions

Use ConvertKit to deliver your lead magnet and capture email addresses.

Do 2 things:

1) Create a simple landing page that includes:

  • Who the lead magnet is for
  • The irresistible offer
  • A clear CTA to submit their email

2) Set up an automated email that delivers the lead magnet immediately upon signup

Use the "visual automation" feature to send the lead magnet.

Here's how to set a simple one up:

Step 5: Distribute Your Lead Magnet Everywhere to Maximize Visibility

The more people see your lead magnet, the more subscribers you get (and the more money you make).

Here's how I promote my lead magnets:

  1. On LinkedIn - share it in your featured profile section and under each relevant post
  2. On Instagram - use tools like ManyChat to run regular lead magnet giveaways
  3. On YouTube - include CTAs inside your videos, driving viewers to a relevant lead magnet
  4. On Twitter - feature it in your profile and use tools like Tweethunter to automatically plug it when a post gets traction

Step 6: Nurture Your New Subscribers with a Strategic Follow-Up Sequence

Once someone signs up for your lead magnet, your work has just begun. Avoid these two critical mistakes:

1. Not following up at all after you got their email - If you don't nurture the relationship, they'll forget about you.

2. Following up too much, too soon - Don't bombard them with hard-sell emails right away.

(it's kinda like dating - don't spam OR ghost them after a first date)

Instead, create a thoughtful follow-up sequence that:

  • Delivers the lead magnet immediately
  • Provides additional value related to the lead magnet topic over the next 5-7 days
  • Makes a soft pitch for your paid offering around day 8

Remember, your goal is to build trust and establish yourself as a go-to resource.
